St. Stephens and the Floors Its Homes Need
St. Stephens has never incorporated, but with 8,852 residents at the 2020 census it's larger than many towns in Catawba County. The CDP covers nearly 10 square miles in the northern part of the county. Hickory is on its west side and Conover is to the south. To the north, across Lake Hickory on the Catawba River, is Alexander County. Annexations by those neighboring cities have trimmed its edges since 2000, but the community identity remains strong. Springs Road is its main spine, with fire stations, St. Stephens Lutheran School and the traditional route to Friday night games all along it.
Its roots go back a long way. St. Stephen's Lutheran traces its congregation to 1837, when it was organized as Miller's Lutheran, the fifth Lutheran church in the county. St. Stephens High opened in 1934 after several smaller schools merged. Today the area is mainly residential, and estimates suggest a large majority of households own their homes. People who own and stay tend to renovate in stages, starting with a kitchen, then the main living area and later the bedrooms. We plan floors so each phase meets the last cleanly at the transitions.
The lake has a big influence on flooring here. Lake Hickory, created when Duke Power built Oxford Dam in the late 1920s, has more than a hundred miles of shoreline. Homes on the water or along the coves face more summer humidity than houses a few miles inland. Where a lot slopes toward the water, a basement or lower level can be especially damp. We check moisture first, let wood fully acclimate and recommend lake-ready products where they make sense.
St. Stephens sits roughly 3 miles northeast of our Hickory base (straight-line). Our home page has more on what we do across the region.
Floors for St. Stephens Homes, Lakefront to Ranch
Hardwood That Respects the Waterfront
Solid hardwood is a long-term investment, and in St. Stephens it needs a plan for humidity. A house near Lake Hickory can swing from muggy August air to dry heated air in January. Solid planks expand and contract with those changes, opening gaps in winter or cupping in summer. For lakeside homes and anything over a basement, we often recommend engineered hardwood. Its layered core stays much more stable. Farther inland, over a dry, well-ventilated crawlspace, solid oak or hickory is a great choice. In both cases the wood acclimates on-site, and we check moisture in the subfloor and the boards before nailing or gluing anything down.
Luxury Vinyl for Lower Levels and Mudrooms
Walk-out basements, screened porches turned into sunrooms and mudrooms by the boat-gear door are where luxury vinyl plank works best around Lake Hickory. Wet feet, damp towels and fishing tackle won't hurt a quality wear layer, and the planks won't swell like laminate. On a slab we test for moisture and add the right underlayment or barrier. In upstairs kitchens and baths, LVT gives you a stone or tile look that's warmer underfoot and easier to clean than grout. We also level the subfloor carefully, because rigid planks laid over dips will flex, click and eventually separate at the seams. A smooth base is what keeps the floor quiet.
Carpet for Owners Who Stay Put
When you've owned your St. Stephens home for years and plan to stay, bedroom carpet should be chosen for comfort and durability, not just the lowest price. We bring samples to your home so you can compare fiber, density and color in the actual room. We also explain how pad weight affects both feel and wear life. For a finished basement on the lake side, we test the slab first. Depending on the result, we may suggest a moisture-resistant pad or carpet tile that can be lifted and dried out if needed. Old tack strip comes out, squeaks get fixed and seams are placed away from main walkways.
Churches, Schools and Offices
Long-established congregations, a public high school dating to 1934, a Lutheran school on Springs Road and the offices and shops that serve nearly 9,000 residents all need flooring that holds up under heavy group use. We install commercial carpet tile in classrooms, sanctuaries and offices because one damaged tile can be replaced without patching an entire room. Commercial LVP and resilient sheet vinyl work well in fellowship halls, kitchens, nurseries and clinics. We schedule around services, school calendars and business hours, phasing the work or doing it in the evenings and on weekends. Each project begins with a walkthrough and a written estimate.
What St. Stephens Owners Should Weigh Before New Flooring
Waterfront humidity is real
Homes near Lake Hickory deal with more summer humidity than houses farther from the water. Solid hardwood installed without full acclimation can cup by July and gap by January. Ask your installer how long the wood will sit in the house and whether they'll take moisture readings. For lakeside lower levels, engineered hardwood or LVP is often the better long-term choice. We'll show you the readings that support our recommendation, and if the crawlspace needs work first, we'll say so before you buy any flooring.
Plan phases so transitions line up
Many St. Stephens owners stay for years and renovate one area at a time. If the kitchen gets LVP now and the living room gets hardwood two years later, the heights and transitions should already be planned. We note finished floor heights and suggest products that will meet cleanly, so you don't end up with awkward reducer strips or a lip at the doorway later.
Sloped lots mean slab checks
Where land slopes toward the lake and its coves, houses are often built with walk-out basements that have one wall partly below ground. That slab can draw moisture from the soil, especially after heavy rain. Before anything goes over it, the slab should be tested. A reading that's too high can ruin glued flooring or carpet pad. We test on-site and match the floor and underlayment to the actual result.

Flooring Questions from St. Stephens
Who is the best flooring company in St. Stephens, NC?
The Foothills Flooring Company is based in Hickory and has 15 years of experience and hundreds of completed residential and commercial projects. We serve St. Stephens and the rest of Catawba County with free on-site estimates. Call (828) 471-7706 to schedule one. Our services include hardwood, LVP and LVT, carpet and commercial flooring. St. Stephens borders Hickory on the west, so we're close, and we pay special attention to moisture in homes near Lake Hickory. Owners here tend to stay put, so we also help plan floors in phases that will line up later.
Is St. Stephens its own town?
Neither. St. Stephens is an unincorporated census-designated place in Catawba County, bordered by Hickory on the west and Conover on the south. Mailing addresses can show either city, and some edges have been annexed over the years. We serve all of it, along with both neighboring cities, so your address won't affect scheduling, measurement or estimates. What does matter is where the house sits: a home near the lake gets a closer moisture check than one on high, dry ground near the Hickory line.
What flooring do you recommend for a St. Stephens lower level near the water?
For a walk-out basement or lower level near the lake, we usually recommend luxury vinyl plank or engineered hardwood instead of solid wood. First we test the slab for moisture. LVP over the right underlayment is waterproof and works well with wet feet from the dock. Engineered wood gives you real wood that can handle humidity changes better than solid planks. Either way, we leave the proper expansion gaps and use transitions that can handle a little seasonal movement.
Can you match new hardwood to older floors in a St. Stephens house?
Often, yes. Many St. Stephens owners add hardwood to a room or replace a damaged section next to existing floors. We look at the species, plank width and finish, then lace new boards in where possible and refinish the area so it blends. If an exact match isn't realistic, we'll tell you and suggest a clean transition, such as a threshold at a doorway or a change in plank direction between rooms.
Do you install flooring for churches and schools in St. Stephens?
Yes. The community has long-established congregations and schools, and these buildings need durable floors installed around their schedules. We install commercial carpet tile, LVP and sheet vinyl, and we can phase the work between services or during school breaks. After-hours and weekend scheduling is available. We start with a walkthrough and provide a written estimate. A sanctuary, a classroom wing and a fellowship hall can each get the product that suits it.
Will you measure every room yourself?
Yes. We measure on-site at no charge instead of relying on a floor plan or listing, since closets, stairs and transitions all affect the final number. While we're there, we check the subfloor and take moisture readings, which matters near the lake. You'll receive a written estimate with no pressure to commit, and we're happy to leave samples so you can see them in daylight and lamplight.
How much does new flooring cost in St. Stephens, NC?
Across the Hickory area and Catawba County, typical installed prices as of fall 2026 are $4.50 to $7.00 per square foot for most LVP jobs, $8 to $11 for engineered hardwood, $10 to $14 for solid site-finished hardwood and $3.50 to $5.50 for carpet, material plus labor. Tear-out, leveling and stairs are listed separately, and your free written estimate gives the exact number for your St. Stephens project. See the full table on our flooring prices page.
