Catawba, Catawba County

Catawba, the Small River Town That Shares the County's Name

The town of Catawba is easy to confuse with the county around it, but it is its own place: a town of about 700 people in eastern Catawba County, close to the Catawba River. Its post office started out as Chestnut Grove over in Iredell County, moved here in 1859 under the name Catawba Station, and dropped the Station in 1877. The town was incorporated in 1893. Town Hall is on First Street NW, and I-40's Oxford School Road interchange at Exit 138, plus Highway 70, connect residents to Claremont, Hickory and Statesville. For flooring, that small-town footprint means a lot of single-family homes on their own lots, many built over crawlspaces, along with rural properties spread out across the surrounding countryside.

Outside town, Murray's Mill sits on Balls Creek between Brandy's Crossroads and Catawba. William Murray was milling there by 1883, his son John built the present two-story mill in 1913, and a 28-foot waterwheel went in during 1938 before the family shut it down in 1967. The Catawba County Historical Association now runs the site and hosts a harvest festival each fall. Creeks and river bottoms like these are part of why we pay attention to moisture in this corner of the county. Crawlspaces near low ground can stay damp, and a hardwood floor installed over a wet subfloor will cup once the heat comes on. We test before we recommend, and we steer toward engineered wood or LVP where the readings call for it.

Catawba sits roughly 14 miles east of our Hickory base (straight-line). Our Foothills Flooring homepage has more on what we do across the region.

What We Install for Catawba Floors

Hardwood That Suits the House

Hardwood fits well in Catawba's single-family homes, whatever their age, as long as the subfloor is ready for it. We check joists for bounce, screw down loose sheathing and measure moisture before any boards arrive. Solid oak or hickory works over a dry, sound crawlspace; engineered hardwood is the better match over a slab or in rooms where humidity swings. Because homes near the Catawba River and its creeks can see damp crawlspace air in summer, we let the wood acclimate inside your home and leave proper expansion gaps at the walls. The goal is a floor that does not gap in January or crown in July.

LVP and LVT for Busy Rooms

Luxury vinyl plank and tile are a practical fit for country kitchens, back entries and laundry rooms where mud, pets and wet boots come through every day. Rigid-core LVP resists water on the surface and is easy to keep clean. In older Catawba homes with uneven floors, we flatten the subfloor before installing, because thin planks magnify every dip and hump. Over a slab, we check moisture and fill low spots first. LVT is also a good fit for bathrooms where you want a stone or tile look without grout lines to scrub. We can run the same product through several rooms so there are fewer transitions to trip over.

Carpet for Quiet Rooms

Carpet is still a favorite for bedrooms, bonus rooms over garages and family rooms where people want something soft underfoot during the colder months. In Catawba we install broadloom carpet with a pad matched to the room, and carpet tile where a section might need replacing later, such as a game room or a basement. Before installation we fix squeaks by securing the subfloor and look for moisture marks along exterior walls, which can signal a crawlspace issue worth addressing. Seams are laid out away from doorways and high-traffic paths, and transitions to hard floors are set at matching heights so the change underfoot is barely noticeable.

Commercial Work Around Town

Catawba is small, but it still has the kinds of buildings that need tough floors: churches, offices, a town hall, schools and small shops around the Exit 138 interchange. Commercial carpet tile is a smart choice for meeting rooms and offices because damaged squares can be swapped individually, while commercial LVP and resilient sheet vinyl handle entries, fellowship halls and kitchens. To keep a church or office running, we can phase the work room by room or schedule it after hours and on weekends. Rental property owners can also get durable LVP installed between tenants. The written estimate breaks the job into stages so you can see exactly what will be closed when.

Catawba Homeowners: Know This Before New Floors Go Down

River and creek moisture

Catawba sits close to the Catawba River, with creeks like Balls Creek running through the surrounding countryside. Low-lying lots near water often hold more humidity under the house. That moisture moves into the subfloor and then into any wood floor above it. We check readings before quoting hardwood and suggest engineered wood or LVP when conditions are borderline. Testing takes only a few minutes.

Rural homes, varied construction

Outside the town center, homes in this area were built over many decades, each with its own framing and subfloor quirks. Some have plank subfloors, some plywood, some slabs. Each needs different prep for a flat, stable result. That is why our estimate includes looking under the existing floor rather than quoting from a room diagram alone. No two houses get the same plan.

Order of work matters

If you are planning other updates, such as new cabinets, paint or trim, the sequence affects your floors. Hardwood generally goes in before base trim is reinstalled, while carpet should be among the last jobs so it is not damaged. We will talk through timing during the free visit so the floor is not disturbed by other trades. Good sequencing protects your investment.

Questions

Flooring Questions from Catawba

Who is the best flooring company in Catawba, NC?

The Foothills Flooring Company is a solid choice for the town of Catawba. We are based in Hickory, with 15 years of experience and hundreds of completed residential and commercial projects behind us. We serve Catawba and the rest of Catawba County, offer a free on-site estimate, and can be reached at (828) 471-7706. Our crews install hardwood, LVP and LVT, carpet and commercial flooring. Catawba is a straightforward drive east from Hickory on I-40, and we check for the crawlspace moisture common near the river and Balls Creek before recommending a floor.

Do you serve the town of Catawba or the whole county?

Both. The town of Catawba is a small community in the eastern part of the county, and it is part of our regular coverage of all of Catawba County. We also serve Caldwell, Burke and Alexander Counties. If you are not sure whether your address falls inside town limits, it does not matter for us; we will come measure either way.

Is my Catawba home's crawlspace too damp for hardwood?

It might be, and that is worth knowing before you buy. Homes near the Catawba River or creeks such as Balls Creek can carry extra humidity under the floor. We take moisture readings on the subfloor during the free visit. If the numbers are high, we will recommend addressing the crawlspace first or choosing engineered hardwood or LVP instead.

Can you replace flooring in a church fellowship hall without canceling services?

Yes. We can schedule work on weekdays, after hours, or in phases so the sanctuary or fellowship hall is ready when you need it. Commercial LVP or resilient sheet vinyl is a good fit for fellowship halls and kitchens, and commercial carpet tile works well in classrooms and offices. The written estimate lays out each phase.

What is the best floor for a farmhouse kitchen with a lot of mud traffic?

Rigid-core LVP is usually the best answer. It handles water and grit, cleans easily, and is comfortable to stand on. In older homes we level the subfloor first so the planks do not flex or separate. If you love the look of wood, many LVP products mimic it closely while standing up better to wet boots.

How does your free estimate work?

We come to your Catawba home or building, measure each room, and check the subfloor for flatness, squeaks and moisture. We walk through options that suit the space and your budget with no pressure to commit. You then receive a written estimate covering materials, prep and installation, so you know exactly what is included before any work begins.

How much does new flooring cost in Catawba, NC?

Across the Hickory area and Catawba County, typical installed prices as of fall 2026 are $4.50 to $7.00 per square foot for most LVP jobs, $8 to $11 for engineered hardwood, $10 to $14 for solid site-finished hardwood and $3.50 to $5.50 for carpet, material plus labor. Tear-out, leveling and stairs are listed separately, and your free written estimate gives the exact number for your Catawba project. See the full table on our flooring prices page.
