Hudson, Caldwell County

Hudson's Lumber and Mill Roots, and Its Floors

Hudson's story starts with timber. The town says it was born in a sawmill camp along the C. and N.W. Railroad. Before it was Hudson, it was known as Sardis, after the Baptist church, and later as Hudsonville, after the lumber-producing Hudson family. It incorporated on March 1, 1905. A year earlier, B.B. Hayes of South Carolina had opened the Hudson Cotton Mill, later known as Shuford Mills, the town's first brick building. The mill at 447 Main Street grew in stages to nearly 180,000 square feet and was added to the National Register in 2013.

Lumber and textile jobs built the town, and the oldest houses date back to that era. Houses from that era were typically built over crawlspaces with wood floors, and after a century a house like that often shows its age underfoot: subfloors that have settled, boards patched where a wall or flue once stood, and several rounds of later flooring on top. We start each estimate by finding out what's underneath. Sometimes that's a floor worth saving. Other times it's a subfloor that needs work before anything new goes down.

Hudson is still a busy small town. It covers about four square miles along US 321, roughly 15 miles north of I-40, and the main campus of Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute is on Hickory Boulevard. The old Hudson Elementary School is now the Hudson Uptown Building, a community center. The town sits at about 1,200 feet with Lenoir just up the road, so winters bring dry, heated indoor air that hardwood floors need to handle.

Hudson sits roughly 12 miles northwest of our Hickory base (straight-line). Our recent project gallery has more on what we do across the region.

Hudson Floors, Old Houses and New

Hardwood Saved or Started Fresh

Hudson's early houses came from a lumber town, so wood floors under later carpet and vinyl are always worth looking for. If the boards have enough thickness left, we can sand them, lace in matching pieces where old repairs show and refinish the whole room so it reads as one floor again. For new hardwood, we use solid planks over a sound, dry crawlspace and engineered planks where moisture or a slab makes solid wood risky. At about 1,200 feet, winter heat dries out indoor air, so every new board acclimates in the house first. That step reduces wide winter gaps and keeps seams tight once humid weather returns.

Plank and Tile Vinyl Over a True Base

In older Hudson kitchens and baths, we often find a layer of vinyl over plywood over yet another floor, with the floor height creeping up against cabinets and appliances. Before luxury vinyl plank or tile goes in, we strip the room back to a solid base, flatten high spots, fill low ones and secure anything that bounces. That prep keeps rigid-core planks locked and quiet. LVP is waterproof on the surface and easy to clean, which suits family kitchens and laundry rooms. It also works well in rentals, where turnover is part of the routine and damaged planks can be swapped out.

Carpet That Fits the Room

Bedrooms, dens and upstairs rooms in Hudson homes are often still carpeted, and for good reason. Carpet is warmer in the cold months and quieter in a house with a busy family. We bring samples to your home and help you compare fiber, density and texture in your own lighting. Then we pick a pad that suits how hard the room gets used. In older houses we take extra care at the subfloor, screwing down squeaky boards and sealing old stains before the new carpet goes in. Stairs get careful treatment too, with secure tack, tight wraps and seams placed out of the walking path.

Floors for Hudson Businesses

Main Street and the US 321 corridor are where Hudson's commercial life is concentrated, and offices, shops, churches and service businesses on routes like those need floors able to handle steady public traffic. We install commercial carpet tile for offices and meeting rooms, commercial LVP for retail and waiting areas, and resilient sheet vinyl where spills and frequent cleaning are expected, such as break rooms, nurseries and medical spaces. Older storefronts often sit on aging slabs or wood, so leveling is frequently part of the job. We can phase work room by room or schedule it after hours and on weekends to keep you open. A written estimate comes after the site walkthrough.

Hudson Homeowners: A Few Things to Check First

Lift a corner before you buy

In a town that started as a sawmill camp, older houses often had wood floors originally. Later owners usually covered them with carpet, linoleum or vinyl. Pull back a corner in a closet or check under a heat register. If you find solid boards in decent shape, refinishing them may cost less than new flooring and keep the house's original character. We'll look with you at the estimate visit, and if the boards are past saving we'll explain why.

Too many layers cause trouble

Each round of remodeling adds height. In some older Hudson kitchens, three or four layers sit on top of the original floor, and adding another can block the dishwasher or create a lip at the doorway. Old vinyl may also be glued down with adhesives that should be tested before removal. We measure the build-up and handle the removal before installing anything new, so the finished floor sits at a sensible height.

Winter dryness affects hardwood

Hudson sits at roughly 1,200 feet, and winter heating pulls moisture out of indoor air and out of hardwood. Boards shrink and gaps open. Letting new wood acclimate before installation, leaving proper expansion space at the walls and running a humidifier in the coldest months all help. Engineered hardwood is a stable alternative if seasonal gaps bother you. Small gaps that close again in spring are normal, but wide ones that stay open may mean the floor was never acclimated.

We Know Hudson
Hudson grew up as a sawmill and cotton mill town, so many older houses here have settled subfloors and several layers of flooring. We find what's underneath before recommending anything, and we fix the base first.

Questions

Flooring Questions from Hudson

Who is the best flooring company in Hudson, NC?

The Foothills Flooring Company is based in Hickory and has 15 years of experience and hundreds of completed residential and commercial projects. We serve Hudson and the rest of Caldwell County with free on-site estimates. Call (828) 471-7706 to set one up. We install hardwood, LVP and LVT, carpet and commercial flooring. Hudson is about 10 miles up US 321 from Hickory, so it's an easy trip for us, and we're familiar with the older mill-era houses where checking the subfloor is the first step.

Can you restore old wood floors in a Hudson mill-era house?

In many cases, yes. Hudson grew up around sawmills and the cotton mill that opened in 1904, and older houses here may have original wood floors under later coverings. If the boards have enough wood left above the tongue and aren't badly water-damaged, we can repair and refinish them. We'll inspect in person and tell you whether restoring or replacing makes more sense. Where a wall was removed or a flue patched, we can weave in boards so the repair doesn't stand out.

Do you install flooring in rentals near Caldwell Community College?

Yes. The college's main campus is on Hickory Boulevard in Hudson, and rentals near a college campus tend to turn over often. For those, we usually recommend LVP with a solid wear layer, since it resists water and scratches and damaged planks can be replaced one at a time. We can schedule installs between leases so the unit is ready quickly.

How far is Hudson from your shop?

Roughly 10 miles up US 321, with Lenoir about 5 miles beyond, so Hudson is well within our regular service area. Caldwell County is one of the four counties we serve, and the short drive makes it easy to come out for a free measurement, return for the install and stop back afterward if you have questions. If your project is a phased job, like one room now and the rest after the holidays, the distance makes that easy to arrange too.

Should I remove the old vinyl in my Hudson kitchen or go over it?

It depends on the condition and how many layers are already there. Going over one sound, flat layer can work. But kitchens in older Hudson homes often have several layers, and each one raises the floor height around cabinets and appliances. Loose or cracked vinyl will also telegraph through new plank. We check the build-up, look for loose spots and give you a clear recommendation, along with the cost of removal in the written estimate so you can compare both options.

Do you install commercial flooring for Hudson businesses and churches?

Yes. We install commercial carpet tile, commercial LVP and resilient sheet vinyl for offices, shops, churches, schools and medical spaces in Hudson. Work can be phased or scheduled after hours and on weekends so you stay open or can still hold services. Each project starts with an on-site walkthrough, any needed leveling is noted up front, and you get a written estimate.

How much does new flooring cost in Hudson, NC?

Across the Hickory area and Caldwell County, typical installed prices as of fall 2026 are $4.50 to $7.00 per square foot for most LVP jobs, $8 to $11 for engineered hardwood, $10 to $14 for solid site-finished hardwood and $3.50 to $5.50 for carpet, material plus labor. Tear-out, leveling and stairs are listed separately, and your free written estimate gives the exact number for your Hudson project. See the full table on our flooring prices page.
