Bethlehem, Alexander County's Shoreline Community
Tucked into the southwestern corner of Alexander County, Bethlehem is a census-designated place of about 4,500 people and the county's largest community. Its southern edge is the north shore of Lake Hickory, the Catawba River reservoir created in 1927 when Oxford Dam was finished. More than a square mile of the community's roughly 8.9 square miles is open water. For floors, that matters: homes near the shoreline sit in air that stays damp much of the year, and wood products have to be chosen and acclimated with that in mind.
NC 127 is the spine of the community. It crosses Lake Hickory from Hickory, runs past Bethlehem Elementary School, and turns more winding as the land climbs north toward Little River. NCDOT counts it as one of only two major lake crossings between Alexander and Catawba counties, and the state has proposed widening it with a second bridge. That bridge is also our route in, which puts most Bethlehem homes a short drive from our Hickory base.
The ground here rolls down toward the water, and side roads like Rink Dam Road lead to coves along the shore. Sloping lots near a lake often mean walk-out basements and lower levels built on a slab, and those slabs can carry moisture that ruins the wrong floor. We test every slab before recommending a product, and lean toward LVP or engineered hardwood when the readings say solid wood would struggle. Heavy rain in 2019 washed out part of Rink Dam Road, a reminder of how much water moves through these slopes on its way to the lake.
Bethlehem sits roughly 5 miles north of our Hickory base (straight-line). Our recent project gallery has more on what we do across the region.
Bethlehem Flooring for Waterfront Homes, Family Homes and Businesses
Hardwood That Handles Waterfront Humidity
Lake Hickory spreads across more than 4,200 acres right at Bethlehem's southern edge, and air that close to that much water carries moisture into every house near the shore. Solid hardwood answers by swelling in July and pulling apart in January. On a main level over a dry plywood deck, it can still be a long-lasting, beautiful floor if it's acclimated in the house and installed with generous expansion room. For walk-out levels, sunrooms and rooms that open toward the water, we usually point owners to engineered hardwood, whose cross-ply core stays flatter. Moisture readings in both the boards and the subfloor have to be in range before we start.
Waterproof Plank for Walk-Outs and Boat-Day Traffic
For Bethlehem homes with lake access, wet feet, damp towels and dogs fresh out of the water are part of everyday life. Luxury vinyl plank and tile take that in stride without swelling or staining, and they're well suited to a walk-out basement slab once it has been tested and prepped. On a slab, we take moisture readings, grind high spots and fill low ones so the planks don't rock or click. On wood subfloors upstairs, we flatten to the manufacturer's tolerance. The result is a kitchen, mudroom or lower-level den you can mop without a second thought after a long day on Lake Hickory.
Carpet and Carpet Tile
Upstairs bedrooms and bonus rooms in Bethlehem still benefit from carpet, especially in homes whose lower level stays cool and damp near the lake. We install broadloom over a pad chosen for the space and stretch it tight so it won't buckle during the humid months. For a walk-out basement rec room, carpet tile with a moisture-resistant backing gives comfort underfoot and lets you lift and replace a single square after a spill or a small leak. We always check slab moisture before carpet goes on a slab, because dampness trapped under carpet is what leads to musty odors and mildew.
Commercial Floors Along NC 127
NC 127 is Bethlehem's main street in practice, carrying traffic past Bethlehem Elementary, churches and local businesses in Alexander County's largest community. Those buildings take steady foot traffic year-round. We install commercial carpet tile, commercial LVP and resilient sheet vinyl for offices, medical and dental practices, schools, churches and retail spaces, choosing each product for the traffic and cleaning routine it will face. Slabs get tested and prepared before installation, and entry areas get walk-off zones sized for wet weather. We can phase the work room by room or schedule it after hours and on weekends so the building stays usable from start to finish.
What Bethlehem Homeowners Should Know Before New Floors
Shoreline Humidity Moves Wood
Lake Hickory covers about 4,223 acres along Bethlehem's southern edge, held back since 1927 by Oxford Dam. Air near that much water carries extra moisture, and solid hardwood takes it on in summer and gives it up in winter, opening gaps or cupping the boards. We acclimate wood inside your home, leave proper expansion room and steer the rooms closest to the shoreline toward engineered hardwood or LVP.
Walk-Out Slabs Need Testing
Bethlehem's land falls toward the shoreline, so lower levels built into a slope often sit on a slab slabs pressed against damp soil. Moisture can wick up through that slab and break down flooring adhesives or trap mildew under carpet. We test slab moisture before every lower-level job and recommend a vapor barrier or a floating LVP system when the readings run high.
Plan Around Boating Season
Summer on Lake Hickory brings guests, boats and heavy foot traffic through lake houses. Installing in late fall, winter or early spring lets hardwood acclimate under steadier conditions and keeps the house free for the busy months. If summer is your only window, we can plan the job in phases so the kitchen and main living spaces stay usable while we work.

We serve Bethlehem and the rest of Alexander County with free on-site estimates. Call (828) 471-7706. We install hardwood, LVP and LVT, carpet and commercial flooring. Bethlehem is right across the NC 127 bridge over Lake Hickory from Hickory, so we can easily come out for measuring, moisture testing and follow-up visits.
What flooring works best in a Bethlehem waterfront home?
For rooms near the water and for lower levels, LVP and engineered hardwood are the safest choices because they tolerate humidity changes. Solid hardwood can still work on a main floor over a dry wood subfloor if it's acclimated and installed with expansion gaps. Since Bethlehem sits right on Lake Hickory's north shore, we test moisture on site before recommending anything for your specific house.
Can you put flooring in a walk-out basement in Bethlehem?
Yes. Sloping lots near the lake commonly lead to lower levels built on a slab slabs. We test the slab for moisture first, then recommend LVP, engineered hardwood or carpet tile based on the readings. If moisture is high, we use a vapor barrier or a floating system so the floor doesn't trap dampness. We also check the transition at the walk-out door, where water most often gets in.
How far is Bethlehem from your shop?
Very close. NC 127 runs straight from Hickory across Lake Hickory into Bethlehem, and it's one of only two major highway crossings over the lake between Catawba and Alexander counties. That short drive makes it easy to fit in your free measurement, return visits and multi-day installs without long travel delays.
Do you install flooring for businesses or churches along NC 127?
We do. We install commercial carpet tile, commercial LVP and resilient sheet vinyl for offices, practices, churches, schools and shops along NC 127 and throughout Bethlehem. We can phase work by area or schedule it for evenings and weekends, so you don't have to close. Slab testing and prep are part of the plan from the first visit, which keeps the schedule from slipping later.
When is the best time to install new floors in a waterfront house?
Late fall through early spring works well for many Bethlehem lake homes. Humidity is steadier, hardwood acclimates more predictably, and the house isn't full of summer guests. That said, we install year-round, and we'll plan a summer project around your schedule with acclimation time and moisture checks built in, so the floor still goes down right.
How much does new flooring cost in Bethlehem, NC?
Across the Hickory area and Alexander County, typical installed prices as of fall 2026 are $4.50 to $7.00 per square foot for most LVP jobs, $8 to $11 for engineered hardwood, $10 to $14 for solid site-finished hardwood and $3.50 to $5.50 for carpet, material plus labor.
