Icard, the Unincorporated Heart of Eastern Burke
Icard is easy to overlook on a map because it isn't a town at all. It is a census-designated place, an unincorporated community that the state gazetteer says was first known as Bowan's Crossing. Even so, about 2,450 people lived inside its boundaries at the 2020 census, more than in neighboring Hildebran, Connelly Springs or Rutherford College. A larger Icard Township surrounds it, and roads like Icard School Road and Icard Rhodhiss Road carry Connelly Springs mailing addresses, which is part of why the name gets missed.
Because there are no city limits, there is no compact downtown either. Icard spreads across roughly 3.8 square miles of eastern Burke County, with US 70 as its main road, about 8 miles from Hickory and 13 from Morganton. Homes sit along the highway, on side roads such as Icard School Road and Icard Grove Avenue, and out along Icard Rhodhiss Road heading north toward the Catawba River and the town of Rhodhiss. A spread-out community like this was not built to a single plan, so we confirm whether each house sits on a crawlspace or a slab, and what is under the current floor, before recommending anything.
The community's identity is tied closely to its schools. Icard Elementary sits on Icard School Road, and East Burke High School and its stadium are part of daily life here. For families and for the churches and businesses that serve them, that means busy floors that take a beating from school-age kids, sports gear and muddy shoes.
Icard sits roughly 8 miles west of our Hickory base (straight-line). Our home page has more on what we do across the region. Icard is an unincorporated census-designated place; the surrounding Icard Township covers a larger area of eastern Burke County.
Floors for Icard Homes, Schools and Churches
Hardwood That Suits the Lot
Icard's homes were built over time along US 70 and its side roads rather than as one subdivision, so the foundation, not the neighborhood, decides which hardwood makes sense. Over a dry, ventilated crawlspace, solid oak or maple nailed to the subfloor is a long-lasting choice. Where readings show moisture, which is common in crawlspaces during humid Burke County summers, engineered hardwood is the safer route because its layered core resists cupping. We take moisture readings, let the wood acclimate indoors and leave expansion room around the perimeter. On slab-built homes, engineered hardwood can be floated or glued down where solid boards cannot be nailed.
Luxury Vinyl for Busy Households
With Icard Elementary on Icard School Road and East Burke High's campus among the schools serving the community, many Icard households are busy ones, with backpacks, sports cleats and pets coming through the door. Luxury vinyl plank stands up to that traffic and to spills in kitchens and baths. Before installing, we level dips and fasten loose subfloor so rigid planks lock tight and stay quiet. Around tubs, toilets and exterior doors we probe for soft spots left by old leaks and replace damaged sections first. LVT in a stone or tile look is a good fit for bathrooms and entryways that take the most water and grit.
Soft Carpet Where It Belongs
Carpet remains a good choice for Icard bedrooms, bonus rooms and family dens where kids play on the floor. We remove the old carpet, pad and tack strip, then inspect the subfloor for stains, soft spots or squeaks and fix them before installing. Denser pad on stairs and hallways extends carpet life in homes with heavy daily traffic from school and sports schedules. We keep carpet out of entries and mudrooms, where wet cleats and mud from the yard would stain it quickly. Carpet tile is available for game rooms or home offices where a single damaged section might need swapping later.
School-Area and Church Commercial Floors
Icard's churches, such as Icard's Grove Baptist on Icard Grove Avenue, along with schools, offices and businesses on US 70, all need flooring that takes heavy traffic and frequent cleaning. We install commercial carpet tile, commercial LVP and resilient sheet vinyl suited to classrooms, hallways, fellowship halls, offices and small retail spaces. To keep services and business running, we can phase the work by area or schedule it after hours, on weekends or around school calendars. Before any glue-down installation, we test the slab or subfloor for moisture and level, which prevents adhesive failures and seams that lift over time.
Icard Homeowners: Know Your Floor Structure First
One Community, Many Foundations
Icard is an unincorporated area of nearly four square miles, and its homes were not built to one plan. Along US 70 and side roads like Icard Grove Avenue, a house on a crawlspace can sit next to one built on a slab, and each needs a different flooring approach. We start every Icard estimate by identifying the structure underneath, because that decides whether solid hardwood, engineered wood, LVP or carpet is the right fit.
Plan for School-Season Traffic
With Icard Elementary and East Burke High both serving the community, and the East Burke stadium in Icard itself, plenty of households here run on school and sports schedules. That means grit, wet cleats and constant traffic at the back door. We suggest waterproof LVP or LVT at entries, kitchens and mudrooms, with a durable wear layer, and saving carpet for bedrooms. Choosing by room this way keeps floors looking good far longer.
Crawlspace Moisture in Humid Months
Icard sits at roughly 1,150 feet in the eastern Burke foothills, where summers are humid and crawlspaces can stay damp for weeks. That moisture can rise into wood floors and cause cupping, or leave musty odors under carpet. We take readings in the floor framing before installing hardwood. When conditions are damp, we recommend addressing ventilation or a vapor barrier first, or choosing engineered hardwood or LVP that tolerates moisture better.

The Foothills Flooring Company is a strong option for Icard. We're based in Hickory, with 15 years of experience and hundreds of completed residential and commercial projects. We serve Icard and all of Burke County, and we offer free on-site estimates. Call (828) 471-7706. We install hardwood, LVP, carpet and commercial flooring. Icard is about 8 miles from Hickory along US 70, so it's an easy trip for our crews, and we check each home's foundation type before recommending materials, since houses here vary from road to road.
Is Icard a town?
No. Icard is an unincorporated census-designated place in eastern Burke County, with Hildebran bordering it on the east. It was first known as Bowan's Crossing. Even without a town government, it counted about 2,450 residents at the 2020 census. Many addresses here, including on Icard School Road, use a Connelly Springs mailing address, and we serve all of them. Just tell us your road when you call.
Do you install floors out along the road toward the river?
Yes. Icard Rhodhiss Road runs north from the US 70 and I-40 area toward the town of Rhodhiss on the Catawba River, and homes along it are well within our Burke County service area. We'll come out to measure, check the subfloor and crawlspace or slab for moisture, and leave a written estimate. If your property is closer to the river or Lake Rhodhiss, we'll factor the added humidity into our material recommendation.
How far is Icard from your shop?
Icard sits along US 70 about 8 miles west of Hickory and 13 miles east of Morganton, with Hildebran between it and the Catawba County line. It's a short, direct drive for our crews from our Hickory base, which makes scheduling estimates and installations straightforward. The visit covers measurements, a look at the subfloor and a conversation about which materials fit each room.
Do you work with schools and churches near Icard?
Yes. We install commercial carpet tile, commercial LVP and resilient sheet vinyl for schools, churches, fellowship halls and offices. Work can be scheduled after hours, on weekends or during school breaks, or phased one area at a time, so classes and services continue. We test the slab or subfloor for moisture and level before installation. For church fellowship halls and Sunday school rooms, carpet tile is worth considering, since a stained square can be replaced on its own.
What flooring holds up best for an active Icard family?
For high-traffic living areas, kitchens and entries, LVP is usually the best choice because it resists water, scratches and muddy shoes. Engineered hardwood is a good option if you want real wood and your foundation allows it. Carpet works well in bedrooms and bonus rooms. We'll look at your home and how you use each room before recommending materials. A written estimate follows with any prep work listed.
How much does new flooring cost in Icard, NC?
Across the Hickory area and Burke County, typical installed prices as of fall 2026 are $4.50 to $7.00 per square foot for most LVP jobs, $8 to $11 for engineered hardwood, $10 to $14 for solid site-finished hardwood and $3.50 to $5.50 for carpet, material plus labor. Tear-out, leveling and stairs are listed separately, and your free written estimate gives the exact number for your Icard project. See the full table on our flooring prices page.
