Rhodhiss Mill Houses, River Air and Better Floors
Rhodhiss was a planned town from the start. John M. Rhodes and George B. Hiss, whose names were combined to make Rhodhiss, invested about $500,000 to build a cotton mill on the Catawba along with a horseshoe-shaped dam, an electric generator, a general store and houses for the workers. The mill opened in 1902, the town incorporated in 1903, and within roughly a decade a steel bridge carried it across the river into Burke County. Today about 1,000 people live in a town that sits partly in Caldwell County and partly in Burke.
Some mill-village housing from that era still stands; in the historic Pacific Mills area near the dam, at least one home on the market was listed as built in 1904. Houses that old usually have framing that has settled, subfloors patched over the years and, sometimes, original wood flooring hiding under later layers. We check what is really there before recommending anything, level and re-fasten where needed, and tell you honestly whether the old boards are worth refinishing.
The Catawba shapes everything else. The current Rhodhiss Dam, completed in 1925 and owned by Duke Power, formed Lake Rhodhiss right at the town's doorstep. River and lake air keeps humidity high through much of the year, so we acclimate wood, take moisture readings in crawlspaces and point riverside lower levels toward waterproof luxury vinyl.
Rhodhiss sits roughly 6 miles west of our Hickory base (straight-line). Our Foothills Flooring homepage has more on what we do across the region. Rhodhiss straddles the Catawba River and also extends into Burke County.
Rhodhiss Flooring for Mill Homes and Waterfront Houses
Hardwood, Old and New
Mill-village homes in Rhodhiss go back to the early 1900s, and some still have their original wood floors under carpet or vinyl. If those boards are sound, refinishing can be worth it. When they are not, a new solid or engineered hardwood floor brings back that character. Either way, the river matters. With the Catawba and Lake Rhodhiss right alongside town, humidity runs high, and wood floors swell and shrink with it. We acclimate new flooring in the house, measure moisture in the subfloor and crawlspace, and leave proper expansion room. Engineered hardwood is often the steadier choice for the dampest rooms.
Luxury Vinyl by the Water
Homes near the dam and along the water see wet feet, boat gear and humid air, and luxury vinyl plank or tile handles all three without swelling. LVP is a natural fit for kitchens, baths, mudrooms and lake-level rooms in Rhodhiss. Older mill houses add one challenge: subfloors that are rarely flat after more than a century of settling. Thin vinyl will show every dip, and its joints can open over a hump. We level low areas, plane down high seams and fasten loose boards first, so the finished floor lies flat and quiet and the planks stay locked together.
Carpet for Cozy Rooms
Carpet is still a comfortable, quiet choice for bedrooms and living rooms in Rhodhiss, especially in older homes where hard floors can feel cold. We help you pick a fiber and pile that fits how each room gets used and pair it with the right pad. In older homes with uneven floors, we correct major dips first so the carpet does not wear unevenly. On lower levels close to the river, we test for moisture before laying anything soft. Carpet tile is a good answer for basements and rec rooms, since a single damaged square can be pulled and replaced without redoing the room.
Commercial Floors on Both Sides of the River
Rhodhiss is small, but churches, community buildings, offices and rental properties on both the Caldwell and Burke sides still need hard-wearing floors. We install commercial carpet tile, commercial-grade LVP and resilient sheet vinyl that stand up to steady foot traffic and clean easily. For rental owners turning over an older mill house, durable LVP cuts down on future replacements. For congregations and offices, we break the work into phases or schedule it after hours and on weekends so services and business go on without disruption. Every commercial estimate comes itemized in writing, so a church board or owner can review it before deciding.
Living Beside the River: Rhodhiss Flooring Advice
Century-old subfloors need attention
Rhodhiss was built as a mill village starting in 1902, and some houses from that era are still lived in. A century of settling leaves dips, humps and patched boards that show through new flooring, especially vinyl. We check flatness room by room, re-fasten loose boards and level before installing. That prep keeps a new floor flat, quiet and lasting.
River humidity is constant
The town sits right on the Catawba, with Lake Rhodhiss formed behind the 1925 dam. That much water keeps the air damp for much of the year, and crawlspaces show it. Hardwood installed without acclimation can cup or gap. We read moisture in the wood and the subfloor, confirm the vapor barrier, and choose engineered wood or LVP where conditions call for it.
Two counties, one town
Part of Rhodhiss lies in Caldwell County and part in Burke County, joined across the river since the early 1900s. For flooring, the county line makes no difference to how we work: we serve both Caldwell and Burke, and every estimate on either side is free, on site and in writing. What matters more is how close your home sits to the water.

Flooring Questions from Rhodhiss
Who is the best flooring company in Rhodhiss, NC?
The Foothills Flooring Company serves Rhodhiss from our Hickory base, with 15 years of experience and hundreds of completed residential and commercial projects. We cover Rhodhiss on both its Caldwell County and Burke County sides, and we offer free on-site estimates. Call (828) 471-7706. We install hardwood, LVP and LVT, carpet and commercial flooring. Many homes here are early-1900s mill houses next to the Catawba River, so we plan every job around settled subfloors and high humidity.
Can the original floors in my Rhodhiss mill house be saved?
Often they can. Some early-1900s mill houses still have original wood under carpet or vinyl. We pull back a section, check the boards for damage, thickness and soundness, and give you an honest answer. If they cannot be saved, we can install new solid or engineered hardwood with the same warmth, after leveling the subfloor.
Do you work on the Burke County side of Rhodhiss?
Yes. Rhodhiss crosses the Catawba River into Burke County, and we serve Catawba, Caldwell, Burke and Alexander Counties. Homes on either side of the river get the same free on-site measurement and written estimate. Call (828) 471-7706 to schedule. Rhodhiss is also only a short drive from Hickory by way of Granite Falls, so scheduling is easy whichever side of the river you live on.
What flooring holds up best in a house near Lake Rhodhiss?
For lake-level rooms and spaces that see wet traffic, luxury vinyl plank or tile is the most durable choice because it is waterproof. Hardwood still works in upper rooms over a dry crawlspace if it is acclimated and installed with proper expansion space. We test moisture before recommending either. Waterproof LVP in an entry or mudroom also keeps lake water from reaching nearby wood floors.
Why does new vinyl look bumpy in older homes?
Luxury vinyl is thin, so it follows the shape of whatever is under it. In older Rhodhiss houses, subfloors have often settled or been patched over the years. If those dips and ridges are not corrected first, they show through and can pull the planks apart. We level and re-fasten before installing to prevent that.
Do you install commercial flooring in Rhodhiss?
Yes. We install commercial carpet tile, commercial LVP and resilient sheet vinyl for churches, offices, community spaces, rental properties and small businesses. We schedule work in phases or after hours and on weekends so your building stays usable. Durable LVP is a popular choice for rental mill houses. Every commercial estimate is written and itemized.
How much does new flooring cost in Rhodhiss, NC?
Across the Hickory area and Caldwell County, typical installed prices as of fall 2026 are $4.50 to $7.00 per square foot for most LVP jobs, $8 to $11 for engineered hardwood, $10 to $14 for solid site-finished hardwood and $3.50 to $5.50 for carpet, material plus labor. Tear-out, leveling and stairs are listed separately, and your free written estimate gives the exact number for your Rhodhiss project. See the full table on our flooring prices page.
