Mountain View, Catawba County

Mountain View, Along the NC 127 Corridor

Mountain View is unincorporated. It's a census-designated place of roughly 3,600 people in western Catawba County. Long View is to the north and Brookford to the northeast, and Hickory's annexations have pushed so far into the area that the CDP is now almost split into northern and southern halves. Most people here still use a Hickory 28602 address. The main road is NC 127. It runs about 4 miles north to downtown Hickory and about 4 miles south to NC 10, crossing Jacobs Fork on the way, and it serves as a commercial strip before meeting US 321 at an interchange.

Water shapes the edges of this community. The Henry Fork, a tributary of the South Fork Catawba River, runs along the northern side, and homes in subdivisions like Old River Falls sit near its banks. Low ground near a river tends to stay damp, and the Jacobs Fork crossing on NC 127 to the south means the community is bracketed by water on two sides. That matters for any home built over a crawlspace or on a slab, because ground moisture works its way up into framing and slabs over time. Before any floor goes down here, we take moisture readings in the subfloor or slab, and we let hardwood adjust to the house before installing it.

Families make up much of the community. Mountain View Elementary on Dwayne Starnes Road enrolls roughly 700 students, who usually go on to Jacobs Fork Middle and Fred T. Foard High on Plateau Road. Homes with kids, backpacks and muddy cleats need floors that can be wiped clean, resist scratches and keep looking good. Durable LVP, a tough carpet in the den and well-finished hardwood fit that daily wear.

Mountain View sits roughly 5 miles southwest of our Hickory base (straight-line). Our Foothills Flooring homepage has more on what we do across the region.

Mountain View Floors for Riverside Homes and Busy Households

Hardwood Near the Henry Fork

Solid oak or hickory looks great in a Mountain View living room, but homes near the Henry Fork and Jacobs Fork can see high humidity in summer and dry heat in winter. Wood swells and shrinks with those changes. We take a reading in the crawlspace or basement first. If it's damp, we fix the vapor barrier or ventilation before installing, or we recommend engineered hardwood, whose cross-ply core moves less. The boards sit in the house until they match the indoor conditions. We also leave the right expansion gap at the walls so summer swelling won't cause the floor to buckle or the planks to lift at the seams.

Waterproof Plank for Family Traffic

In a household that feeds kids into Mountain View Elementary and on to Foard High, kitchens, mudrooms and hallways take the most wear. Luxury vinyl plank handles spilled juice, wet shoes and dog claws far better than laminate or carpet. It's also forgiving where a basement or slab may be damp, as long as the slab is tested and a proper moisture barrier goes down first. We set LVT in bathrooms and laundry rooms where a tile look is wanted without the grout. Every install starts with a flatness check, since rigid-core plank needs a smooth, level base to lock tightly and stay quiet underfoot.

Carpet for Bedrooms and Bonus Rooms

Plenty of Mountain View homes still have carpet in bedrooms, upstairs bonus rooms or a finished basement den. It's warm on winter mornings and quieter than any hard surface. We bring samples to your home so you can see them in your own light. Then we talk through fiber, pile and pad based on who uses the room. A playroom needs stain resistance and a dense pad, while a guest room can go softer. In a basement near the river, we test the slab first and may suggest carpet tile or a moisture-resistant pad. Old tack strip and staples come out, and the subfloor gets checked before the new carpet goes down.

Commercial Floors on the NC 127 Strip

NC 127 through Mountain View is a commercial strip leading to the US 321 interchange. Businesses there get steady traffic and plenty of wet-weather tracking. We install commercial carpet tile for offices, commercial LVP for shops and waiting rooms, and resilient sheet vinyl where cleaning matters most, such as exam rooms, break areas and church kitchens. Since customers keep coming in, we can phase the work so one section stays open while another is done. Weekend and after-hours scheduling is also available. Every commercial job begins with a site visit to measure and check the slab, followed by a written estimate.

Mountain View Homeowners: Read This Before Picking a Floor

River air reaches your subfloor

Mountain View lies between the Henry Fork and Jacobs Fork, and homes near either river can see heavy summer humidity. Moisture rises from the soil into crawlspaces and through slabs. If it reaches a new floor, hardwood cups and the adhesive under vinyl can fail. Before choosing a product, have the crawlspace and subfloor checked. We use a moisture meter at the estimate visit, so the product we recommend fits the conditions in your house.

Annexation does not change the floor

Hickory's annexations have nearly split Mountain View in two, so neighbors on the same road may have different jurisdictions. For flooring it makes no difference. The clay, the humidity and the age of the house are what affect performance. If you're unsure whether you're in Hickory or the unincorporated part of the county, we serve both. What matters is that the estimate reflects your actual house, so we measure every room ourselves rather than working from a listing or a plat.

Plan floors around school-year traffic

With Mountain View Elementary, Jacobs Fork Middle and Foard High drawing from this area, many homes see heavy daily foot traffic. Entryways and kitchens wear out first. A waterproof LVP in those zones, with softer carpet kept to bedrooms, usually lasts longest. If you want to avoid having crews in the house during a busy stretch, scheduling the work for summer break or a holiday week can help.

We Know Mountain View
Mountain View sits between the Henry Fork and Jacobs Fork, so moisture is the first thing we check. We test subfloors and slabs, fix crawlspace issues and let hardwood acclimate fully before installing.

Questions

Flooring Questions from Mountain View

Who is the best flooring company in Mountain View, NC?

The Foothills Flooring Company is based in Hickory and has 15 years of experience and hundreds of completed residential and commercial projects. We serve Mountain View and all of Catawba County, and we provide free on-site estimates. Call (828) 471-7706 to set one up. We install hardwood, LVP and LVT, carpet and commercial flooring. Mountain View is about 4 miles south of central Hickory on NC 127, so we're close by, and we know to check for moisture in homes near the Henry Fork and Jacobs Fork. That one step keeps a new floor from cupping or lifting a season later.

Is my Mountain View home inside city limits, and does it matter for flooring?

It depends on the street. Hickory has annexed parts of Mountain View, nearly dividing the community in two, while other parts remain unincorporated in Catawba County. Both use Hickory mailing addresses. For flooring, it doesn't really matter. We serve both areas, and the factors that affect your floor are soil moisture, the subfloor and how the room is used, not the jurisdiction.

Can I put hardwood in a house near the Henry Fork?

Yes, as long as the moisture is managed. Homes near the river can have damp crawlspaces that make solid hardwood cup or gap. We measure moisture in the subfloor and crawlspace before quoting. If the readings are high, we recommend fixing the vapor barrier or ventilation first, or we suggest engineered hardwood, which tolerates humidity changes better.

What floor works best for a Mountain View basement or slab?

Usually luxury vinyl plank or carpet tile, depending on how you use the space. Slabs in this area can carry moisture from the ground. We test the slab first. If it's within limits, LVP over a proper underlayment gives you a waterproof floor that looks like wood. If the readings are high, we'll explain the options before recommending anything, which may include a sealer or a floating floor that tolerates some vapor. A finished basement den near the river is a good example of a room where a little testing saves a lot of regret.

Do you work with businesses along NC 127 in Mountain View?

Yes. The NC 127 corridor through Mountain View has shops, offices and service businesses that can't afford long closures. We install commercial carpet tile, commercial LVP and resilient sheet vinyl, and we can phase the job or work after hours and on weekends. We start with an on-site walkthrough and a written estimate that lays out the phases, so you can plan staffing and signage around the work.

How far in advance should I schedule a flooring estimate in Mountain View?

Call as soon as you're seriously considering new floors. The measurement is free and doesn't commit you to anything. It also gives you time to look at samples in your own home and plan for any subfloor or moisture work. That's especially helpful if you're trying to finish before the school year starts or before holiday guests arrive.

How much does new flooring cost in Mountain View, NC?

Across the Hickory area and Catawba County, typical installed prices as of fall 2026 are $4.50 to $7.00 per square foot for most LVP jobs, $8 to $11 for engineered hardwood, $10 to $14 for solid site-finished hardwood and $3.50 to $5.50 for carpet, material plus labor. Tear-out, leveling and stairs are listed separately, and your free written estimate gives the exact number for your Mountain View project. See the full table on our flooring prices page.
