Hiddenite: A Gem-Country Community in Alexander County
Before it had its current name, this corner of Alexander County was known as White Plains. That changed after mineralogist William Earl Hidden, sent south by Thomas Edison to hunt for platinum, came through around 1879. A green variety of spodumene found nearby was named hiddenite in his honor, and the community took the name too. The Emerald and Hiddenite Mining Company formed in 1881, and today Emerald Hollow Mine still invites visitors to dig. Hiddenite was briefly incorporated in 1913 before its charter was repealed in 1919, and it remains a census-designated place of roughly 500 people.
The best-known building is the Lucas Mansion, a Queen Anne house from about 1900 that was later enlarged to three stories and fitted with its own power generator and water system. It joined the National Register in 1982 and now houses the Hiddenite Arts and Heritage Center. Houses like that one remind us how much older homes in this area vary underneath: different framing eras, additions built on their own schedule, and floors that have been patched rather than replaced. We look at all of it before quoting.
Hiddenite sits at about 1,093 feet along NC 90, with US 64 passing to the south and the granite face of Rocky Face Mountain just outside the community. Homes are spread along rural roads rather than packed into subdivisions, and where a house sits over a crawlspace, ground moisture under it matters as much as the room itself. We check crawlspace conditions and subfloor moisture before we recommend any wood product. US 64 swings south of the community, so most local traffic moves along NC 90, which links Taylorsville and Statesville.
Hiddenite sits roughly 17 miles northeast of our Hickory base (straight-line). Our recent project gallery has more on what we do across the region.
Hiddenite Floors We Install, Room by Room
Hardwood Suited to Rural Homes
Out along NC 90 and the side roads off it, a house built over a crawlspace lives with whatever moisture the ground gives off, and that moisture decides whether solid hardwood will stay flat. We take readings of the subfloor and, where we can get access, look at the crawlspace before ordering. When conditions are dry and stable, solid oak or another domestic species is a lasting choice for living rooms and halls. Where they aren't, engineered hardwood gives the same look with a core that resists cupping. Either way, the boards acclimate inside the house first, and we leave expansion space at the walls so seasonal swelling has somewhere to go.
Luxury Vinyl for Mudrooms and Kitchens
Rural living means dirt, gravel dust and wet boots coming in the back door, and in a community where visitors spend the day digging at a gem mine, mud is part of the scenery. LVP and LVT stand up to that kind of traffic and clean up with a damp mop. We install them over a subfloor we've checked and flattened, because vinyl plank shows every hump and can separate at the joints if the floor underneath flexes. In older houses we sometimes find soft spots near exterior doors or plumbing, and we replace that sheathing before any plank goes down.
Comfortable Carpet for Quiet Rooms
Hiddenite's homes are spread out and quiet, and carpet keeps bedrooms and dens warm through the winter months at around 1,100 feet. We help you pick a pile and fiber that suit the room, then set it over a pad matched to the traffic it will see. Stairs get careful attention so the carpet wraps each nosing cleanly. For a finished basement or a playroom where spills are likely, carpet tile lets you lift and replace a single square. If there's old carpet in the way, we remove it and inspect the subfloor before the new one is stretched in.
Commercial Floors for Local Organizations
Hiddenite's community life gathers around places like its elementary school on Sulphur Springs Road, its churches, and the arts center in the Lucas Mansion. For schools, churches, offices and small shops, we install commercial carpet tile, commercial LVP and resilient sheet vinyl that can handle steady foot traffic and routine cleaning. Older buildings often need slab or subfloor prep before a commercial product goes down, and we plan for it from the first visit. Work can be phased or scheduled after hours and on weekends, so a congregation, classroom or office isn't displaced while the floor is replaced. We'll also walk the building with you so the transitions between rooms stay safe for everyone.
Before You Re-Floor a Home in Hiddenite
Crawlspaces Set the Rules
Hiddenite's homes are spread along NC 90 and its side roads, and older rural houses are often built over crawlspaces. If the ground under the house stays damp, hardwood above it can cup and LVP adhesives can let go. We check subfloor moisture and look for standing water or missing vapor barrier in the crawlspace. If conditions are poor, we'll tell you before you spend money on a floor that won't last.
Old Additions Rarely Match
Older homes here, like the Lucas Mansion that grew from two stories to three, were often expanded in stages. An addition can sit a half inch higher or lower than the original rooms, with different joists and sheathing. We measure height differences across doorways and plan transitions or leveling so the new floor runs smoothly from one section of the house to the next.
Gravel and Grit Wear Floors Fast
Gravel drives and unpaved yards on rural lots bring a lot of grit indoors. Fine grit acts like sandpaper on finished hardwood and dulls soft vinyl wear layers. We suggest a heavier wear layer on LVP near entries, durable finishes on hardwood, and good walk-off mats at each door to keep the abrasive material out. Choosing a mid-tone, lightly textured surface also helps hide the fine dust that rural roads send indoors.

Flooring Questions from Hiddenite
Who is the best flooring company in Hiddenite, NC?
The Foothills Flooring Company is a good place to start. We're based in Hickory and bring 15 years of experience and hundreds of completed residential and commercial projects. We serve Hiddenite and the rest of Alexander County, and our on-site estimates are free. Reach us at (828) 471-7706. Our crews install hardwood, LVP and LVT, carpet and commercial flooring. Since Hiddenite is a rural community along NC 90 east of Taylorsville, we pay close attention to crawlspace moisture before recommending any wood floor.
Do you travel out to rural properties around Hiddenite?
Yes. We serve all of Alexander County, including homes along NC 90, the roads around Rocky Face Mountain and the back roads off US 64. Distance doesn't change our process: we come out, measure, check the subfloor and crawlspace, and give you a written estimate at no cost. Scheduling for rural jobs works the same as it does in town.
Is LVP a good fit for a farmhouse in Hiddenite?
It often is, especially for kitchens, mudrooms and laundry rooms that see a lot of outdoor traffic. LVP resists water and wipes clean. The catch with older farmhouses is the subfloor, which may have soft spots or uneven areas from decades of use. We repair and flatten those first so the plank lays flat and the joints stay tight.
Can you install flooring for a church or school near Hiddenite?
We can. We install commercial carpet tile, commercial LVP and sheet vinyl for churches, schools, offices and small businesses. For buildings that are in use most days, we can phase the job by room or wing, or work evenings and weekends. We plan any slab prep or leveling up front so the schedule holds. That includes buildings like the Hiddenite Elementary campus on Sulphur Springs Road or a fellowship hall that hosts events most weekends.
Will hardwood hold up in a house over a crawlspace?
It can, if the crawlspace is dry. In a rural community like Hiddenite, ground moisture from below is the main risk for wood floors. We test the subfloor and inspect the crawlspace before recommending solid hardwood. If moisture runs high, engineered hardwood or LVP is a safer choice until the crawlspace is corrected. We'll explain the readings so you can decide.
How do I get a quote for new floors?
Call (828) 471-7706 and we'll set up a time to visit. We measure every room, look at the subfloor and talk through what you want from the space. You'll get a written estimate with no pressure to sign. There's no charge for the measurement, and the estimate is yours to keep. Whether you're near the Lucas Mansion or out past Rocky Face Mountain, the visit works the same.
How much does new flooring cost in Hiddenite, NC?
Across the Hickory area and Alexander County, typical installed prices as of fall 2026 are $4.50 to $7.00 per square foot for most LVP jobs, $8 to $11 for engineered hardwood, $10 to $14 for solid site-finished hardwood and $3.50 to $5.50 for carpet, material plus labor.
